Highlands Christian Academy and Grace Baptist Church are pleased to welcome the following new faculty members for the 2017-2018 school year!
Mrs. Amy Allen will be teaching secondary math this year. Amy grew up in Allegany, New York and earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio. She taught math for five years before moving to South Florida where she met her husband, Pastor Steve Allen, at Grace Baptist Church. Mrs. Allen taught HCA secondary math for seven years before taking a break to stay home and homeschool her growing family. Pastor Steve and Mrs. Allen have three children who will be HCA students this year: Erin (12th grade), Emilie (11th grade), and Jonathan (8th grade).
Mrs. Allen enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and playing the piano, especially on Sunday mornings at Grace. Excited about returning to teach at Highlands this year, she shares: “It’s like coming back home. I look forward to pouring myself into my students’ lives, both spiritually and academically.”
Mrs. Allen’s favorite Bible verse is Philippians 1:6: Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ.
Mrs. Angie Canning will be teaching 3rd grade this year. Angie grew up in Ohio and Kentucky. She attended Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri where she received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a minor in Missions. As a young elementary teacher at Highlands, Mrs. Canning met her husband Bill (HCA secondary English teacher). She taught at HCA for four years (2nd and 4th grade) before spending many years at home caring for and homeschooling her children.
Mr. and Mrs. Canning have three daughters who will be coming with them to school each day: Abigail (11th grade), Caroline (9th grade), and Sarabeth (5th grade). Mrs. Canning shares, “I am so excited that all five of us Cannings will be on the same campus this year! I am blessed to be back teaching in the classroom after homeschooling for nine years. I can’t wait to see what God has planned for me and my students.” She also enjoys cooking, working out, and spending time with her family.
Mrs. Canning’s favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 41:10: So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Mrs. Flora Colboch will be teaching VPK4 this year. Flora grew up in Florence, South Carolina and met her husband Gary while they were both students at Baptist University of America in Decatur, Georgia. Partners in ministry for over 30 years, they have served in Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. They moved to Deerfield Beach earlier this year when Pastor Colboch began his ministry as Senior Pastor of Grace Baptist Church. The Colbochs have three grown daughters–Courtney, Bethany, and Lindsay–and a brand new granddaughter, Hadlee Grace.
Mrs. Colboch enjoys teaching children, sewing, crafting, cooking, and spending time outdoors, especially playing tennis. She’s excited about joining the preschool team at Highlands. “I’m looking forward to working with a great group of people,” she shares, “and making a positive impact on the students and their families.”
One of Mrs. Colboch’s favorite Bible verses is Romans 10:13: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Mrs. Adriene Da Costa will be teaching K5 this year. Adriene is already loved in HCA elementary where she has worked for the past four years. Prior to that, she taught preschool in Lake Worth. Mrs. Da Costa shares how blessed she feels to be teaching and serving at Highlands, and to be a part of nurturing a new generation of Christ-followers.
Mrs. Da Costa grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Law before coming to the United States. She met her husband Cesar in Fort Lauderdale, and they have two children: Giovanna and Gregory.
Mrs. Da Costa’s favorite Bible passage is Psalm 121: I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
Miss Caris Everette will be teaching elementary and secondary PE and will be the new Knights athletics secretary. Caris grew up right here in Pompano Beach. She came to Highlands in preschool and graduated with the Class of 2014, making her an HCA Lifer! She has attended Palm Beach State and is currently studying Education at Florida Atlantic University.
Miss Everette enjoys crafting and spending time with friends and family. Excited about being back at Highlands, she shares: “I am looking forward to the opportunity of experiencing HCA through a new perspective, as well as interacting with the students and sharing God’s Word with them daily.”
Miss Everette’s favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through him who gives me strength.
Mrs. Eve Good will be teaching elementary music this year. Eve grew up in Haines City, Florida and attended Clearwater Christian College in Clearwater, Florida where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and also met her husband Jim (HCA Athletics Director). Mrs. Good taught at HCA for seven years (K5 and elementary music), followed by several years at home with her young family. The Goods now have four children who will be students on the HCA campus each day: Jimmy (9th grade), Jack (5th grade), Jenifer (4th grade), and Julia (K4).
“I’m looking forward to teaching again at HCA,” Mrs. Good shares, “because I know this is what God has called me to do. I love teaching and kids and music, and I’m excited about sharing my love for music with our HCA students and helping them use music to glorify God in their lives.” Mrs. Good also sings on the worship team at Grace, enjoys shopping, and loves spending time with her family and friends.
Mrs. Good’s favorite Bible verse is 1 John 4:4: Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.
Mrs. Lisa Lawrence will be teaching secondary English this year. Lisa grew up in Taylor, Michigan. She received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri; Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; and Master of Arts in English from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri.
Mrs. Lawrence and her husband Steve, our new School Administrator, have six grown children: Sarah, Jennifer, Samuel, David, Elise, and Daniel. They are the proud grandparents of Calvin, Landry, Harvey, Walter, Scarlett, and Violet. The Lawrences moved to Deerfield Beach and began their ministry at Highlands this summer. Mrs. Lawrence shares, “I am excited to be a part of a ministry that strives to educate the heart, mind, and souls of its students.” When Mrs. Lawrence isn’t teaching or spending time with her family, she especially likes to read.
One of Mrs. Lawrence’s favorite Bible verses is Psalm 3:3: But you, Lord, are a shield that protects me; you are my glory and the one who restores me.
Mrs. Jennifer Nicholson will be teaching 2nd grade this year. Jennifer grew up in the Chicago suburbs and then in South Jersey. She attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia and received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Florida Atlantic University.
Mrs. Nicholson and her husband Scott were married just two days before she started teaching at Highlands. She taught in elementary for five years and, now back at Highlands, has three children who will be coming to school with her each day: Liam (1st grade), Finn (K5), and Isabel (K3). “I am looking forward to teaching at Highlands so I can be a blessing and encouragement to my students and their families,” Jennifer shares. “I love teaching students to memorize God’s Word!” Mrs. Nicholson also enjoys outings with her family to playgrounds and the Palm Beach Zoo, watching home improvement shows, and reading.
Mrs. Nicholson’s favorite Bible verse is Micah 6:8: He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Mrs. Sharon Owens will be teaching secondary technology this year. Sharon grew up in seven different states, but lived the longest in Michigan. She attended Michigan State in East Lansing, Michigan and met her husband in North Miami Beach. They have three children: Jonathan (freshman at FAU), Katherine (HCA 8th grader), and Lauren (HCA 6th grader). Mrs. Owens homeschooled her children for over a decade and has also worked in sales, marketing, and technical recruiting. She enjoys bird watching, reading, and is a Miami Heat fan!
Mrs. Owens looks forward to seeing how God will work and move at Highlands this year. “God called me here,” she shares, “and I’m sure there will be opportunities to help the students grow spiritually and academically! I love kids and teaching, but I especially love learning and imparting that love of learning to others.”
Mrs. Owens’ favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 40:31: But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
