HCA Faculty Stories

What sets Highlands Christian apart is our faculty and staff. As we share the story of Highlands, we know it’s these men and women who provide the living curriculum for the students! Here is a sampling of our outstanding teachers who love Jesus Christ, are dedicated to Christian education, and come to work each day ready to make a difference in the lives of students and families!

 

heidi-smithMrs. Heidi Smith teaches first grade. She is thankful that biblical training is integrated throughout the curriculum at HCA, both for the students in her classroom and for her own two daughters at Highlands. “We talk about God in the Bible lesson, but also in math, phonics, social studies, science, and all the other subjects,” she shares. “This goes a long way in helping the students to understand that God wants to be in every part of our lives.” Read more…

 

 

 

 

Sandy.RobertsonMrs. Sandy Robertson teaches 7th grade life science, high school biology, and high school marine science. She feels that what sets HCA apart from other schools is the concern and care we have for the students. “We want them to excel and succeed in their academics,” she shares, “but most important, we are concerned about their spiritual need for salvation and living the Christian life.” Sandy has four grown children and three grandchildren. Read more...

 

 

 

 


Larry.Smith cr2Mr. Larry Smith
is the HCA Secondary Principal. He comes to school each day excited about shaping the lives and learning experiences of students. He shares, “I love kids and understand that life isn’t always perfect, but we can be in Christ. Mr. Smith’s wife, Monika, teaches at Highlands, and their three children are all HCA grads. Julie.MethodMiss Julie Method
 
teaches Spanish 1, high school drama, junior high drama, and elementary drama. Miss Method especially loves the family feeling at Highlands. “Students are not just students, but they are part of a family. Succeeding in class is not the most important aspect,” she says. “We want the students to succeed in life.” Over the years, Miss Method has impacted and nurtured more students than we could count to live for Christ and use their talents for Him.  Read more…

is the HCA Athletic Director. He also teaches 6th & 9th grade boys PE and high school weight training. It is his goal to make a spiritual impact on the students through his personal testimony, sharing devotions, and praying with and for his students and players. Robin.Peters crMrs. Robin Peters is our HCA Preschool Director with years of teaching experience. She is enthusiastic and passionate about preschoolers learning to their highest potential, and always wants to be sure her students and families know how much she cares about them. JoAnn.ScriverMrs. Joann Scriver teaches K5. She loves teaching reading and bringing extra enrichment into her classroom. “I have been involved with a Reading Buddy program over the years with older students as the buddies to my K5 students,” she shares. “I have also involved my class in many of my summer vacations so they can have a ‘pretend experience’ on my diving adventures, trips to the Bahamas, Belize, and Alaska.” Mrs. Scriver has four children and countless “adopted” children she has loved and cared for over the years. Read more…

 

 

 

 


Monika.SmithMrs. Monika Smith
teaches elementary PE, 6th grade science, and 7th grade Bible (her “dream” job). What she loves most about Highlands is the well-rounded approach to the educational and spiritual experience that is available. “I get to teach what I love,” Mrs. Smith shares, “integrating God’s Word into each area.” Mrs. Smith is the mom of 3 HCA grads and the grandma of an adorable one-year old! Read more…

 

 

 

 

Debbie.KemperMrs. Debbie Kemper is a K5 Aide, teaches high school yearbook, and also oversees the elementary yearbook. She loves that Highlands is a close-knit Christian community. “We can know students in a way that would be unlikely in a public school setting,” she shares. “Students can share their prayer requests, and as a class we pray for them. Mr. Josh Good teaches elementary PE, junior high PE and art, and high school weight training and art. He especially enjoys making his classes fun and real—with a focus on God! Jaime.Bouffard crMiss Jaime Bouffard teaches 2nd through 9th grade PE and 6th grade social studies. As one of our first-year teachers, she shares, “At Highlands, I have noticed a great emphasis on community. Faculty are welcoming and kind. Judy.MeriwetherMrs. Judy Meriwether teaches K5. What she loves most about Highlands is that it is “a proven ministry.” She shares, “God’s protection is evident, in that in an ever-changing world, HCA continues to remain spiritually relevant in carrying out its mission for more than 50 years.” Mrs. Meriwether has two grown children, both HCA graduates, and 4 amazing out-of-state grandchildren she doesn’t get to see often enough! Read more…

 

 

 

 

Mrs. Damaris Nevitt teaches elementary music, 6th grade drama and choir, 7th/8th grade choir, and high school choir. She shares that she loves working with all the different personalities and talents and seeing them meld together to create a beautiful mosaic in music! “Everyone has a gift,” Mrs. Nevitt says, “and it’s awesome to see it all come together.” Read more…

 

 

 

 

Ginger.AlvarezMrs. Ginger Alvarez teaches K4 at Highlands. One of her favorite parts of the school year is when the preschool classes have an Easter Walk, in which the children can walk in the path of Jesus as He completed His Work during the Week of Passion. She shares, “It is a hands on experience that makes the experience more real to the children, and it stays with them.” Mrs. Alvarez’s three children are all HCA graduates. Mrs. Leslie SheinLeslie.Shein is our Elementary Assistant Principal. She loves that Highlands feels like a family! She shares, “We take the education of our students seriously, but also strive to help our students and families grow socially and spiritually as well.” Leslie and her husband are both HCA grads, and their two children are now students in HCA Elementary! Rose.BriscoMrs. Rose Brisco teaches third grade and coaches varsity softball. Her own three sons attended HCA, and now her granddaughter is a happy preschool student here. “HCA definitely has a family atmosphere!” Mrs. Brisco shares. “So many staff members have longevity at Highlands and love this place…and the students!” Read more…
