Accelerated Reader Overview
Accelerated Reader is a computerized management system that monitors and evaluates reading practice and achievement. Teachers assign each student a reading level during the first two weeks of school, and then students are free to select from a variety of color-coded books at this individual level. After reading a book, students use the AR software to test their reading comprehension. All first through fifth graders participate in the AR program throughout the school year, while kindergarten students participate at the teacher’s invitation.
How AR Works
There are four reading periods throughout the school year. At the end of each period, each student who has reached the needed point total for that period receives a certificate for a free meal at Chick-fil-A.
Does my child’s book have an AR Quiz? What reading level is it?
If you child reads a book that is not from Highlands Media Center, chances are it will still have an AR quiz available for testing. If you are not sure, you may check online with AR Book Finder.
