At Highlands Christian Academy, we are pleased to offer students and families a library collection of more than 12,000 books and 24 magazine subscriptions. We are intentional about developing and instilling a life-long love of reading. We believe reading is key to a quality education as well as to spiritual growth.
In addition to our vast reading collection, we provide numerous electronic materials including World Book, an online database (school family ID and password required). We encourage the use of the statewide provided Florida Electronic Library for home research needs; computers are available for self-study, research, and access to NetClassroom; and our on-site librarian is available to assist HCA families with their informational needs.
The library is located on the second floor of the Christian Education building that is adjacent to the Fellowship Center. The hours are 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on regular school days (Monday through Thursday) and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays.
Every two weeks, all kindergarten and elementary classes participate in a scheduled library time when they are introduced to special books and monthly themes, and instructed in library skills. The balance of the time is dedicated to browsing the collection and checking out books. Books and magazines are loaned for two weeks and are renewable for an additional two weeks. Scheduled library times are available to the secondary classes.
The library offers electronic retrieval and research training each school year to all students in grades two through twelve.
Kindergarten and first grade students may check out one book during their scheduled school visit, and the rest of the student body may check out two books during the school day. An additional book may be checked out before or after school. School families are encouraged to visit the library before and after school for book check-out and computer research.
Elementary students participate in a reading contest both during the school year and during the summer. Students who read the required amount of books each month receive a free coupon to Chick-fil-A. In the past, the students have enjoyed a visit from “Billy the Marlin” to kick off the annual reading contest. Summer Reading Lists and Reading Verification forms are accessible below. Students turn in Reading Verification forms on the last school day of each month (and during the first week of school for summer reading).
