Highlands Christian Academy and Grace Baptist Church are pleased to welcome and introduce several new faculty members to the community this week. Four educators were introduced yesterday, with an additional five today! [Click here for the first article in this series.]
Mrs. Flora Colboch will be teaching VPK4 this year. Flora grew up in Florence, South Carolina and met her husband Gary while they were both students at Baptist University of America in Decatur, Georgia. Partners in ministry for over 30 years, they have served in Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. They moved to Deerfield Beach earlier this year when Pastor Colboch began his ministry as Senior Pastor of Grace Baptist Church. The Colbochs have three grown daughters–Courtney, Bethany, and Lindsay–and a brand new granddaughter, Hadlee Grace.
Mrs. Colboch enjoys teaching children, sewing, crafting, cooking, and spending time outdoors, especially playing tennis. She’s excited about joining the preschool team at Highlands. “I’m looking forward to working with a great group of people,” she shares, “and making a positive impact on the students and their families.”
One of Mrs. Colboch’s favorite Bible verses is Romans 10:13: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Miss Caris Everette will be teaching elementary and secondary PE and will be the new Knights athletics secretary. Caris grew up right here in Pompano Beach. She came to Highlands in preschool and graduated with the Class of 2014, making her an HCA Lifer! She has attended Palm Beach State and is currently studying Education at Florida Atlantic University.
Miss Everette enjoys crafting and spending time with friends and family. Excited about being back at Highlands, she shares: “I am looking forward to the opportunity of experiencing HCA through a new perspective, as well as interacting with the students and sharing God’s Word with them daily.”
Miss Everette’s favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through him who gives me strength.
Mrs. Lisa Lawrence will be teaching secondary English this year. Lisa grew up in Taylor, Michigan. She received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri; Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; and Master of Arts in English from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri.
Mrs. Lawrence and her husband Steve, our new School Administrator, have six grown children: Sarah, Jennifer, Samuel, David, Elise, and Daniel. They are the proud grandparents of Calvin, Landry, Harvey, Walter, Scarlett, and Violet. The Lawrences moved to Deerfield Beach and began their ministry at Highlands this summer. Mrs. Lawrence shares, “I am excited to be a part of a ministry that strives to educate the heart, mind, and souls of its students.” When Mrs. Lawrence isn’t teaching or spending time with her family, she especially likes to read.
One of Mrs. Lawrence’s favorite Bible verses is Psalm 3:3: But you, Lord, are a shield that protects me; you are my glory and the one who restores me.
Mrs. Jennifer Nicholson will be teaching 2nd grade this year. Jennifer grew up in the Chicago suburbs and then in South Jersey. She attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia and received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Florida Atlantic University.
Mrs. Nicholson and her husband Scott were married just two days before she started teaching at Highlands. She taught in elementary for five years and, now back at Highlands, has three children who will be coming to school with her each day: Liam (1st grade), Finn (K5), and Isabel (K3). “I am looking forward to teaching at Highlands so I can be a blessing and encouragement to my students and their families,” Jennifer shares. “I love teaching students to memorize God’s Word!” Mrs. Nicholson also enjoys outings with her family to playgrounds and the Palm Beach Zoo, watching home improvement shows, and reading.
Mrs. Nicholson’s favorite Bible verse is Micah 6:8: He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Mrs. Sharon Owens will be teaching secondary technology this year. Sharon grew up in seven different states, but lived the longest in Michigan. She attended Michigan State in East Lansing, Michigan and met her husband in North Miami Beach. They have three children: Jonathan (freshman at FAU), Katherine (HCA 8th grader), and Lauren (HCA 6th grader). Mrs. Owens homeschooled her children for over a decade and has also worked in sales, marketing, and technical recruiting. She enjoys bird watching, reading, and is a Miami Heat fan!
Mrs. Owens looks forward to seeing how God will work and move at Highlands this year. “God called me here,” she shares, “and I’m sure there will be opportunities to help the students grow spiritually and academically! I love kids and teaching, but I especially love learning and imparting that love of learning to others.”
Mrs. Owens’ favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 40:31: But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Welcome to the HCA family, Mrs. Colboch, Miss Everette, Mrs. Lawrence, Mrs. Nicholson, and Mrs. Owens! We look forward to getting to know you better and are so thankful you’re here!
